Three police officers were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and another man who ran away after the explosion was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location showed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the property was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had taken place on a level above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
