European Cup Matches Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & More

Greetings to a fresh night of electrifying European Cup football. Nine fixtures are planned for tonight, with three English teams in action. Chelsea face Barça in the marquee match of the evening, whilst The Magpies travel to Marseille and Manchester City host Leverkusen.

Current Standings

We're at the midway point of the league stage, so the rankings is taking form. All six British teams are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only 2 pts between fifth and sixteenth place, thus there's a sense of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. All remains open.

Match Schedule

These are tonight’s matches, each kicking off at 8pm except where noted:

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
  • Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (5.45pm)
  • Bodo/Glimt v Juventus
  • Barcelona take on Chelsea
  • Dortmund v Villarreal
  • Leverkusen visit Man City
  • Newcastle travel to Marseille
  • Napoli v Qarabag
  • Athletic Bilbao clash with Slavia Prague

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter involving Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging superstar from CĂ´te d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have a peedie bit of history.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute goal has earned Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead at Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Even though Newcastle traveled to the French south coming off their restorative two-one home English top-flight win over Manchester City on Saturday, and having defeated Union SG, Benfica and Bilbao in the European Cup, their only on the road win since the start of April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Eddie Howe was eager to discuss the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the manager, whose side are sixth in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available 12 and automatic qualification to the last 16 nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the MBM version of Maradona is handling for that.
