Apex Legends' Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid traversal can rejoice to discover that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature provides gamers a surge of propulsion when scaling ledges and walls. According to key developer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of the game for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for some time, but executing it isn't easy to perform and a player might not realize it's possible without external guides," Canavese states. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so users can easily see the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, making accessible the mechanic and adding new ways to compete for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure technique accessible to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains the team wants players to experience empowerment — including ones who are new.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, looked at what the community execute, and we wondered, 'How can we provide these capabilities to more players?'" Mohan explains. "Because currently, some of these techniques are kind of janky to use — you need to change controls and execute within one-frame windows. We proposed, 'What if we create a more official implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is primarily the central theme in this season, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie all getting enhancements to maintain them in motion. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will propel players into the air much quicker than before. Her defensive walls now include a roof and capability to provide speed boosts to those nearby. However the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie receiving the most attention now, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states Legend designer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been top-tier previously, but with the introduction of other characters, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of restore her to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, the developer says the team evaluated each of her abilities and introduced significant changes. Her jetpack received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, enabling the player to remain longer aloft. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which lifts teammates skyward for redeployment or retreat — requires reduced delay to activate. She's also getting some new perk choices that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," he says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's lone airborne map, this location, is getting a mobility-focused overhaul, with major changes that opens up choke points and makes securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers state Apex Legends this update is all about providing gamers the tools required to keep up with matches.

"Essentially, we examined the game's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
